Today our nation celebrates the birth of its independence, usually in the form of fireworks, barbecues and parties. As enjoyable as this is we should take a moment to reflect and honor what it cost our founding fathers to establish such freedom and liberty. These were men who against all odds stood up against an empire, stood firm, and literally laid down their lives for what they believed in. We need more men like this in our generation, ones who lack complacency and timidity but exude righteousness with the willingness to sacrifice.
We may not be fighting for our lives in our everyday routine (although many of our troops are and we pray for their safety) but we do deal with moral and spiritual battles every day. Our founding fathers shared some quotes that provide insight into why they were willing to sacrifice for what they believe in:
“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters. Whereas true religion and good morals are the only solid foundations of public liberty and happiness…”
“Religion and morality are the essential pillars of civil society.”
“Men, in a word, must necessarily be controlled either by a power within them or by a power without them; either by the Word of God or by the strong arm of man; either by the Bible or by the bayonet.”
These were men who gave everything to establish our country believing for freedom and liberty to reign and a better world to be birthed as a result. There is one more passage I would like to share with you which comes from Philippians 2:5-8, Paul writes:
“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.”
This is such a powerful example that speaks to so many areas. It elaborates on respect, to not feel superior to those around you but to serve the world around you with a loving heart. Humility, to show the need for more than just yourself in your life. It speaks to integrity, where obedience is upheld to the very end despite knowing the consequences that are to come. This is sacrifice at its finest. I am so proud to have founding fathers who embraced their faith and modeled it in a way that literally changed the world. They learned this from the one who modeled it best, Jesus. Today we honor you all for your love, dedication and sacrifice. I pray we will live our lives in a way the reflects who we are and what we believe in.
Happy 4th of July everyone!
